| Where did Buy It * Downtown® Come From? |
![]() |
Buy It*Downtown® was created by Buy it Local, a Tennessee based company. Buy It*Downtown® is a community card program, specifically designed to support the local economy and lock in spending for local merchants. Initial support for Chattanooga's downtown community card program was made available through a public-private partnership with a local, downtown economic development organization, several local philanthropic foundations and corporate sponsors. Our mission: to connect shoppers with local merchants. The tools, technologies, solutions and strategies of Buy it Local's community card programs focus on making it easier for shoppers to support local merchants. All participating merchant locations are connected to the Buy it*® System- a custom, private electronic card network, which tracks card activity across locations. Card sales are directed at group sales, as well as individuals. Card programs are also available for universities. The idea for Buy It*Downtown® was developed in the Fall of 2006 and officially launched to the public on November 19th, 2007. The first card was sold December 7th, 2007. By the end of 2010, it is the goal of the public and private partners associated with this initiative to drive at least a million dollars back into the Chattanooga downtown economy through the Buy it *Downtown® program. Shoppers are encouraged to spend unspent balances as quickly as possible- since unused cards do not benefit the local economy. The Buy it*® community card program is available to other cities and communities.
